Why Event Insurance Matters
Event cancellation can cost thousands even for relatively modest gatherings — venue deposits, catering contracts, entertainment fees, and marquee hire are often non-refundable. If cancellation results from fire, flood, supplier insolvency, extreme weather, or key person hospitalisation, insurance reimburses the irrecoverable costs. Public liability is equally important — most venue hire agreements require you to provide a minimum of £5 million public liability cover, which event insurance provides as standard. For weddings specifically, use our Wedding Insurance Calculator which covers the unique requirements of wedding-specific risks. For the liability cover element see our Public Liability Calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
The venue covers its own liability for the building and permanent fixtures. The event organiser is separately responsible for liability arising from the event itself — guest injuries from activities, equipment, or entertainment.
Yes — most policies cover cancellation due to extreme adverse weather preventing the event from proceeding. Normal poor weather does not typically trigger a claim.
High-risk events including fireworks displays, motorsports, and extreme sports may be excluded or require specialist cover. Always declare the full event type and activities accurately at application.
As soon as you start incurring irrecoverable costs — typically when you pay a venue deposit. Most policies cover costs already incurred at inception.
A basic single-day event public liability policy for up to 500 guests costs approximately £50–£100. Adding cancellation cover for £20,000 of irrecoverable costs adds £30–£80 depending on the event type and risk factors.
Enter the total cost of the event and select the event type and date. Event cancellation insurance covers irrecoverable costs if the event cannot proceed due to specific insured causes: extreme weather, key person illness, venue cancellation, or transport strikes. The insured causes vary significantly between policies — read the list carefully and compare against the risks most relevant to your event. Premiums are typically 0.5-2% of the total event cost depending on the cause list, location, and time until the event. For events booked well in advance, taking out insurance early is advisable: some causes (foreseeable political disruption, for example) may be excluded if the event is insured after the cause becomes known. Public liability is often included in event packages but verify the level is sufficient for your expected attendance.
