The exchange rate shown is the mid-market rate — the midpoint between the buy and sell prices that banks and money transfer services use as their base rate. The rate you actually receive when changing money will typically be worse than this by a margin that varies significantly by provider: airport bureaux de change offer the worst rates (often 10-15% worse than mid-market), high street banks are typically 2-5% worse, and specialist online transfer services such as Wise or Revolut often come within 0.5-1% of mid-market. For international payments, the difference between providers can be substantial on larger amounts. Always compare multiple providers for significant conversions rather than using the most convenient option.
