No-Claims Discount Calculator

Our no-claims discount calculator shows the financial value of your no-claims discount, the premium impact of making a claim, and whether it is worth claiming versus paying the repair cost out of pocket. Your NCD is one of your most valuable insurance assets — understanding its financial worth prevents costly mistakes at claim time.

How No-Claims Discount Works

UK car insurers award a discount for each consecutive claim-free year of driving. The ABI standard discounts are: 0 years = no discount; 1 year = 25%; 2 years = 35%; 3 years = 45%; 4 years = 55%; 5 years = 60%; 6+ years = 63–65%. Maximum NCD reduces annual premiums by approximately 60–65% compared to zero NCD on the same risk profile. Making a claim typically reduces NCD by 2 years. NCD protection (typically £30–£80 per year extra) preserves your NCD after one or two claims — for drivers with 5+ years NCD, protection is generally good value. Use our Car Insurance Calculator to compare premium estimates at different NCD levels, and our Compare Insurance Types Calculator to see how NCD interacts with different cover levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — NCD is portable between insurers. Your insurer issues an NCD proof letter at renewal or on cancellation. Always obtain this letter when switching.

Any claim may affect your NCD even if the accident was not your fault — until your insurer recovers costs from the at-fault party. Some insurers protect NCD for proven non-fault claims. Windscreen claims typically do not affect NCD.

Estimate the total cost of the damage. If it is less than your excess plus 2 years of premium increase from NCD loss, paying out of pocket is cheaper. This calculator quantifies both sides for any claim amount.

NCD accumulated on a car policy typically cannot be used for van or motorcycle insurance — each vehicle class builds its own NCD independently.

After a claim that reduces NCD from 5 years to 3 years, you need 2 further claim-free years to return to 5 years. With protected NCD, the level is maintained immediately.

Enter your current NCD level — years claim-free — and your base premium. The calculator shows the discount applied at each NCD level up to the maximum (usually five or more years) and the premium at each stage. NCD discounts are substantial: five years no-claims can reduce premiums by 60-75% with most insurers. Protected NCD add-ons allow a specified number of claims without losing the discount — the cost of protection is typically 10-15% added to the discounted premium. Whether NCD protection is worthwhile depends on the premium, the number of protected claims allowed, and your own assessment of accident risk. One small claim can cost several years of NCD — the calculator helps assess the premium difference at various NCD levels to inform whether making a claim or paying out of pocket is more cost-effective.
