Voluntary NI Contributions

Find out how much it costs to fill gaps in your NI record and boost your State Pension.

Enter the number of years missing from your National Insurance record. You can check gaps at gov.uk/check-state-pension — the service shows each qualifying year and whether filling a gap would improve your State Pension. Missing years can typically be filled voluntarily by paying Class 3 NI contributions. The deadline for filling gaps from 2006/07 to 2018/19 was extended — check gov.uk for current deadlines as these have changed following high demand. The calculator shows the cost of filling gaps versus the resulting State Pension uplift. For most people with gaps, the payback period is relatively short — additional State Pension income from a filled gap often covers the cost of the voluntary contribution within two to three years of drawing the pension.
