About Us
TheTaxCalculator.co.uk started with a simple problem: working out your take-home pay in the UK is surprisingly complicated. Tax codes, National Insurance, pension contributions, student loans, Scotland versus England rates — it adds up quickly. We built this site because we wanted a place where anyone could get a straight answer without needing an accountant.
We launched with a handful of calculators and kept adding more based on what people were actually searching for. Over time that grew into the 100+ tools you can use here today, covering everything from income tax and mortgages to energy bills and insurance estimates.
What we do
Every calculator on this site is free. There are no sign-ups, no paywalls, and no accounts to create. You put in your numbers, we do the maths, and the results stay on your screen — we never see the figures you enter because all calculations run directly in your browser.
We update rates and thresholds at the start of each UK tax year (6 April) and whenever HMRC or the government announces changes that affect the numbers. The 2026/27 rates are live across the site.
Where the numbers come from
Our income tax and National Insurance rates come directly from HMRC. Scottish income tax rates are set by the Scottish Parliament and we apply those separately when you select Scotland. Mortgage and savings calculations use standard financial formulas — the same ones lenders and banks use. For insurance, energy, and bill calculators, we use published data from the ABI, Ofgem, and other industry sources as benchmarks.
We are not affiliated with HMRC, HM Treasury, the Financial Conduct Authority, or any government body. We do not give financial advice — our calculators give you information to help you have better conversations with your employer, lender, or financial adviser.
How the site is funded
We display adverts through Google AdSense. That is how we keep the tools free. Our calculator results are completely independent of our advertisers — we do not accept payment to recommend or feature financial products.
Something wrong?
If you spot a mistake in a calculator or a rate that needs updating, please let us know. We take accuracy seriously and we fix errors quickly. Drop us a message at hello@thetaxcalculator.co.uk and we will look into it.
